Girls Basketball Moves on to Compete in the SWEET 16 !!

Lady Spartan Basketball Take Top Awards at Districts

 

Several players and coaches earned awards from the District 15 winter meetings. Junior Marcella Sizer was named to the District's underclassman team. Sizer average 12 points and 10 rebounds a game this year. This is the second year in a row she has been named to this team. Junior Rachel Murray was also named to the underclassman team as well as being named the Division III Underclassman of the Year. Rachel average 19 points a game and became the all-time leading scorer in Spartan history this year. This is the third year in a row she has won this award.

Senior Taylor Ritter was named to the District's All-Area Upperclassman Team. Taylor was one of the Spartans' leading rebounders, defensive specialist in the paint and a team leader. She will be joined by Senior Aubrey Rains. Aubrey average almost 13 points a game this year and is fourth on the all-time Spartan scoring list with over 1,000 points. Aubrey was also named the District Upperclassman of the Year in Division III. Aubrey will represent District 15 in the North/South State All-Star game.

Coach Steve York was voted Assistant Coach of the Year in Division III. This is the tenth time in 25 years that Coach York as won this award. Coach York has also been recognized at the state level and will be receiving the Bob Arnzen Award during halftime of the girls' state semifinal game on March 17th at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus. Coach Tim Gabbard was voted the Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. 11 times he has been voted coach of the year for District 15 and has also been voted state coach of the year twice. Both coaches will have the honor of coaching the District All-Stars team.

Taylor and Aubrey will be playing in the District All-Star game on March 20th at Edgewood High School at 6 p.m. Aubrey will also be playing in the State All-Star game on April 19th at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.

Over 50 high schools, located in the counties of Montgomery, Preble, Warren, Greene, Clinton and Butler counties make up District 15. Congratulations to everyone on being recognized by fellow coaches and peers!

The HS Lady Spartans Basketball team outscored the competition with a 43-34 final score to earn the win and have a chance in the Sweet 16 battle  this Wednesday, March 7th in the regionals at 6:15PM at Springfield High School against Summit Country Day.

Good luck to these talented young ladies as they take on the competition.
