Students in Mrs. Muterspaw and Mrs. Turner’s first grade classes wrapped up a month-long literature study of the E.B White classic Charlotte’s Web. In addition to learning new vocabulary, analyzing the characters and writing about their connections to the story, the students spent an entire day celebrating and creating through STEM activities. One such activity challenged students to work in small groups to create a safe and effective way for Charlotte’s babies to “balloon” to their new homes after hatching. Students were given a variety of materials and multiple opportunities to test their designs and make modifications if necessary. To close out the day, the first graders were treated to “spider eggs” (cheese balls) and “pig slop” (sherbet punch) as well as various fair foods, including cotton candy, corn dogs and caramel apples. Many of the students also dressed in their best fair attire for the occasion.
