Congratulations Lady Spartans Soccer 2017 District Runner-Ups!

Despite a tight battle, Waynesville lost a heart-breaking game against Indian Hill for the District Championship Thursday night.  Waynesville, the underdog in seeding, battled Indian Hill all game and held them to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation.  For the second time this week, the Lady Spartans headed into overtime playing two extra 15 minute periods.  Both teams got some looks at the net, but at the end of double overtime, the game remained tied 0-0, which meant they were headed to a shoot-out.  Ultimately, the Lady Spartans lost the penalty kicks 4-3.  The loss is a tough end to a spectacular season in which the Lady Spartans went 15-2-2, won their third straight league championship, and finished as District Runner-Ups for the third year in a row despite moving up a division to Division 2!  These girls have a lot to be proud of and look forward to building on their success next season!  Stay tuned for information about the Senior All-Star Game and awards…

Update 9-29-2017:   Lady Spartans Soccer Advances to 8-1-2 with Win Over Fenwick

The varsity clenched another victory at home Wednesday night over the Fenwick Falcons.  Waynesville got the first goal of the game when senior captain Megan Osterhage had a beautiful one-touch volley into the back of the net off of junior Marcella Sizer's cross.  The score remained 1-0 at the end of the first half as both teams battled but neither could find the goal.  The Lady Spartans grabbed their next goal with 26 minutes to go in the 2nd half when Osterhage ripped a shot that was deflected by the Fenwick keeper.  The deflection fell at the feet of Sizer, who powered the ball into the goal.  Fenwick responded six minutes late with a goal of their own off of a direct kick just outside of the penalty box.  Without hesitation, the Lady Spartans answered with Sizer's breakaway goal off of a give-and-go combination with Osterhage.  Sophomore goalkeeper Riley Rice had 4 saves for the night, including the penalty kick she smothered.  Rice's efforts were supported by her defense: senior captain Jessica Gill, senior captain Katie Feldmann, junior captain Jennifer Slyby, and sophomore Josie Miller.  The midfield efforts have also been solid from senior Kourtney Rentz, senior Liana Webb, junior Anna Miller, and sophomore Megan Handle.  Junior Sara Napier, Junior Jenna Senetra, sophomore Kelsey Stamm, and freshman Jenna Foley have all contributed significantly to the team's efforts with their strong play.

The JV also beat Fenwick 3-1 Wednesday night.  After going down 1-0 on a long, lofted shot, freshman Hannah Gill was taken down in the penalty box and awarded a penalty kick, which she sank to tie the score in the first half.  Eight minutes into the second half, the Lady Spartans drove the ball deep into Fenwick territory and found freshman Grace Moore down the sideline.  From outside the box, Moore powered a shot over the keeper's head into the far corner, putting Waynesville up 2-1.  The JV continued their attack in the second half, and found the goal again with 10 minutes to go.  Gill slotted a pass through the Falcon defense and onto Moore's foot, who then chipped the keeper sealing the 3-1 victory.  Junior goalkeeper Emily Bassett and her defense, junior Morgan Baker, sophomore Olyvia Blythe, sophomore Kailee Webb, and freshman Brielle Mahoney, held the Falcons at bay after the first goal with their aggressive steps to win the ball.  Midfielders Leah Butterbaugh, Lilli Diaz, Cheyenne Smith, Teagan Cassidy, Katie Todd, and Lydia Anderson and forwards Rylee Click and Jaiden Byram all contributed solid play to the JV's efforts.  The JV turned around and played Beavercreek at home on Thursday.  Despite their efforts to match the possessive play of Beavercreek, the Lady Spartans fell 6-1, putting the JV record at 8-1-1 for the season.  Blythe got the only goal for the Spartans when she dropped a perfect shot just over the keeper's hands from the 40 yard line.

The Lady Spartans return to league play on Monday when they take on Preble Shawnee at home.  The JV game starts at 5:30, and the varsity starts at 7:15.  Come out and support them as they look to defend their first place league standing!
