On Saturday, Waynesville walked into Springfield’s gym for the 5th year in a row to compete for a District title. In a rematch of last year’s District Championship game, the Lady Spartans faced the Lady Warriors of Mariemont. The game started out close, but Waynesville was able to build a comfortable lead in the second half to secure the championship with a score of 52-41. Senior Isabella Cassoni lead the team in scoring with 25 points and 3 steals. Senior Alexei Van Schaik scored 10 points with 5 assists, and senior Emma Whitaker grabbed 8 points and 5 rebounds. Sophomore Emme Greely contributed 7 points while sophomore Caroline Stupp lead the team in assists with 7. The championship makes Waynesville’s 4th District Championship title in the last 5 years.
Wednesday, the Lady Spartans took on an incredibly tough and talented Purcell Marian in the Regional Semifinals. After Waynesville jumped out to a 15-6 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, Purcell Marian turned up the defensive pressure and got to the basket to close the gap and take the lead at halftime. Solid 3 point range shooting and a strong performance in the paint secured the win for Purcell Marian, who advances to the Regional Finals. Junior Megan Bailey battled for position inside grabbing 13 rebounds and 3 blocks in the game. The Lady Spartans finish their season with an impressive 21-5 record. With this year’s wins, head coach Tim Gabbard moves to 8th in the state in all-time wins with 628.
