GOOD NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE WLS ARTWORK BEING DISPLAYED   Starting this Friday the community and our art department at Wayne Local are pairing up to display student work downtown! There are 13 stores involved in displaying work, each store will be marked to let you know what stores have student artwork hanging. Our work will be diverse and range from all grades. Some high school artwork will be for sale and available for purchase. WAYNESVILLE SPARTANS TO PLAY AT FIFTH THIRD FIELD – DAYTON DRAGONS TICKETS AVAILABLE   The WHS varsity baseball team will once again be selling Dayton Dragons tickets to members of the community. In exchange for the sale of tickets, the varsity team will have the opportunity to play at Fifth Third Field on Thursday, May 5^th at 4:30 PM against Oakwood High School. The cost of attendance is free to the high school games. Tickets for Dragons games are for Friday, May 13^th beginning at 7:00 PM and Sunday, May 22^nd beginning at 2:00 PM. LADY SPARTANS TEAMING UP WITH LEBANON FORD FOR THE ANNUAL FORD TEST DRIVE!   Lady Spartans Basketball Team will be having their annual Ford test drive on Saturday, April 9th between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  The girls will be out getting drivers for this event.  If you are 18 years old or older and have a valid driver’s license we hope that you will come up and test drive a car or truck for us.  After you drive you will get a coupon for 10% off your meal at Gameday and a $5 off card at Stonehouse.  We would like to thank both of these establishments for helping us out.  Your cost is Zero.  All you have to do is take a short test drive and fill out a paper.  Hope to see you there.   You can also email Tim Gabbard at ( tgab_58@yahoo.com) if you would like to schedule a test drive. NOTE FROM MRS. SMITH’S 2^ND GRADE   The second grade students have been hard at work learning many new skills! In math, we have just begun studying money. Students are learning coin identification, values, counting mixed groups of money, adding and subtracting money, and solving money story problems. Many students use Touch Points to count money more easily. These dots are drawn on the coins in domino formation to represent counts of five, so the quarter has five dots, the dime two, and the nickel one. This allows students to skip count just by fives, even when counting mixed sets of coins.   Students have greatly enjoyed the many resources available on INFOhio, especially our weekly computer lab visits to use BookFlix. This program pairs a fiction and nonfiction text on the same topic, and allows children to listen to the stories online. Afterward, they can play games to work on vocabulary and comprehension skills. This program appeals to students due to the variety of interesting texts and the freedom of choice in text selection.   Students have begun studying polar bears. Through our novel study from the Magic Tree House series, Polar Bears Past Bedtime, students have learned many interesting facts, and practiced skills such as main idea and detail, sequencing, and expression.   Thank you to all of my parent volunteers who help out in many ways! CARDBOARD CHALLENGE JUDGES NEEDED WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9 This is just a friendly reminder that the Wayne Local Cardboard Challenge is coming up next Wednesday, we need your help as a judge to make this event a success. The event is going to be on Wednesday, March 9 at 5:30 at the Waynesville Elementary School, 659 Dayton Rd, Waynesville, OH 45068. The cardboard challenge is open to grades K-12, we are expecting about 150 participants this year. The basic goal of the event is to help students see the value in inventive improvisation using materials they have on hand. Based on what we experienced last year, most of the projects will probably be arcade games with some kind of moving parts. It will be very entertaining. As a Cardboard Challenge judge, you are in the position to be a role model for students, and encourage them to continue to find creative ways to recycle, invent, and create with their hands. Judges will work in small groups to talk to students about their projects, and encourage our next generation of innovators and problem solvers. You will have a very basic score card to fill out for each project. We'll go over it at the event, and there will also be light refreshments for you. We will hand out prizes for craftsmanship, creativity, innovation, and use of recycled materials in a short closing ceremony at the event at 7:00 pm (judges do not have to stay for the ceremony). It would be helpful for judges to arrive at 5:30, the students will be setting-up from 5:30 to 5:45, and judging will start promptly at 5:45. Your time commitment will only be about an hour. CARDBOARD CHALLENGE   It's time for .....The Cardboard Challenge, this event will be open to All students of Wayne local schools. We have opened the event to all grade levels this year from Preschool to High school. It’s not too late to still think, create and build. Last year we had over 75 students participate we would love to double or triple that this year. You can enter your own creation or together as a team!! DREAM..... CREATE.....BUILD ...you are only limited by your own imagination!! If you need an entry form they can be picked up in the elementary office. Get Ready for the Cardboard Challenge! Be sure to get those registration forms filled out and turned back in!!! This year we have some fantastic event sponsors and are offering a $100 Grand Prize, we also have some other cash prizes as well as tickets to Kings Island, Cincinnati reds, COSI, Cincinnati zoo, Newport Aquarium and more.  Students of all grade levels in the Waynesville School District are invited to build a cardboard creation and bring it to the cafeteria on Wednesday, March 9 at 5:30 P.M. for the Cardboard Challenge Arcade. The underlying rule of this event is simple: students use cardboard and other recycled materials to create an original project. That's all. The rest is left to the creators’ very capable imaginations.    Volunteer judges from engineering, arts, and similar professions will be on hand to talk to students about their projects. Miamisburg Art Gallery High School Art Exhibition 2016   This year the 25^th Annual High School Art Exhibition/Competition, sponsored by the Miamisburg Art Guild and the Warren County Educational Service Center, is being held at the Miamisburg Art Gallery located at 16 N. Main Street in downtown Miamisburg.  Ribbons for 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd, and 4^th place will be awarded for each category in the show.  Best of Show winner will receive a special ribbon and prize as will winners of the President’s Award, Jack Blandford Award, Doris Harting Award and Joan W. McCoy Memorial Awards. MIDDLE SCHOOL CONCERT COMING SOON   Mark your calendars for Monday, March 21^st at 6:30pm – it’s time for the next Middle School Concert!  All middle school bands and choirs will be performing in the high school gym.  In honor of the month of March, all three middle school bands have been working on marches, learning about the style and form of these unique pieces of band literature.  In addition, each band will be playing a thematic piece that has posed new challenges for our young musicians.  Come support the hard work these students have been making – you will notice a huge difference from December’s Winter Concert!

MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL 2016 SUMMER ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES: START PLANNING NOW!     Wright State University offers Pre- College Summer Camps 2016. These programs offer enrichment and exploration of many interesting subjects.    The WSU office of Pre-College Programs in conjunction with the College of Science and Mathematics, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the University Libraries are pleased to offer Exploring STEMM – Enriching Minds through Science 2016, as well as Residential Camps and Institutes focused on STEMM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine.   Students who are selected will participate in a variety of STEMM disciplines over a two-day period. Waynesville Junior High and High School Squads  Including Football, Basketball, and Competition Cheerleading tryouts for the 2016-17 school year will be held March 14-16, 2016.  Parents of any interested student currently in grades 6-11 should plan to attend an informational meeting on Wednesday evening, March 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the middle school / high school cafeteria. Lady Spartans Youth Volleyball Join us as we kick off the mini-season at our FREE CLINIC: Fri. March 11, 2016, 5:00pm-8:00pm    Current Grades 2^nd-6^th  Each player will receive basic instruction and training from the Lady Spartans coaching staff and volleyball players. Those who participate in the mini-season will have team practices and the opportunity to apply her fundamental skills in competitive matches. Spartan Football MULCH Madness The Waynesville High School Football Team will be selling mulch again this year. This annual sale serves as a fundraiser to help offset the cost of our team camp at Higher Ground. Each bag of “Triple Shredded Dark Black Gold” mulch is $5. 2016 Waynesville High School Baseball Youth Skills Camp – Saturday, March 19^th Waynesville High School Baseball will be holding a youth skills camp on Saturday, March 19^th. All players will receive instruction from current players and coaches that will better prepare them to continue on the tradition of excellence in the Waynesville Baseball family. Instruction will be adjusted to meet and improve the specific areas of need as determined by the abilities of each individual camper. 1^st  Grade -– 4^th Grade - 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM 5^th Grade –- 8^th Grade - 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM Registration forms are available in the middle and high school offices as well as the youth association website. Inaugural Waynesville Baseball Cornhole Tournament – March 19, 2016 – 1:00 PM Tickets are now on sale for the inaugural Waynesville Baseball Cornhole Tournament on March 19^th. The cost is $20 per team. All teams are guaranteed at least three games, pizza, water, and entry into raffle drawings. Games will begin at 1:00 PM in the outfield of the varsity baseball diamond. In case of inclement weather, games will be played on the football field or in the middle and high school gyms. WELLNESS WC Combined Health District Newsletter Feb. 2016   REDUCING ENERGY CONSUMPTION AT HOME   Reducing energy consumption around your home is an important way to go green and it could save you money.  You can reduce your utility costs by being more conscious of your energy choices around your home.  Here are a few simple ways to reduce costs and energy: Unplug Electronics like computers, TVs and cell phones will drain power even when they’re turned off or fully charged.  The U.S. Department of Energy says 75 percent of electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while products are turned off.  Save energy by making sure you totally cut off power to your gadgets when they’re not in use.  Either routinely unplug devices from the wall or purchase power cords that can be switched on and off to cut off multiple power sources at once. Wash Wisely Your dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer are two huge sources of energy depletion in your home.  Wash wisely by using cold water whenever possible, and make sure you gather a full load of laundry or dishes before washing to maximize each usage.  Don’t forget to clean your lint filter after drying your clothes – a clean filter improves air circulation.  Be conscious of how much you prewash your dishes; scraping off food, rather than rinsing is sufficient.  Also let your dishes air dry. Cook Consciously If you’re cooking for one or two, consider investing in smaller appliances, such as a toaster oven.  A toaster oven can use one third to half as much energy as a full-sized oven, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.  Remember to keep range-top burners and reflectors clean.  This will help reflect the heat more efficiently, and will save you energy.  Be sure to cover your pots when boiling or heating liquids.  Not only will it get the job done more quickly, but you’ll be reducing your energy output. FLU SEASON   Flu season up until this point has been relatively mild, but flu activity is predicted to increase over the coming weeks.  The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.   Flu symptoms: Fever or feeling feverish/chills; Cough; Sore Throat; Runny or Stuffy Nose; Muscle or body aches; Headaches; Fatigue   Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby.   You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. 2016/2017 SEVENTH GRADE VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS The Ohio Department of Health has revised the School Immunization Requirements effective January 4, 2010. All students are to receive an additional dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine BEFORE entering the seventh grade. If your child has received a Tdap vaccine within 5 years of entering the seventh grade (2012 or later), this will meet the requirement.   Additionally, beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, one dose of meningococcal vaccine is required prior to entry into the 7th grade. This requirement is met if your student has had this vaccine at any time before entering 7th grade.  

2016/2017 SENIOR VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Meningococcal: Beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, all pupils entering the 12th grade are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal. A second (2nd) dose of meningococcal) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 12th grade. The second (2nd) dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday with at least eight (8) weeks between the first and second dose. If the first dose of meningococcal  vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. If a pupil is 15 years of age or younger, only one  dose is required. GENERAL INFORMATION CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT Ohioans who suspect child abuse or neglect now have one phone number that can put them in contact with child welfare or law enforcement officers in their county. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) launched 855-OHCHILD (855-642-4453), where reports can be anonymous. CHILD FIND A Search for all children with disabilities between the ages of 3 and 21. Child find is the process of identifying, locating and evaluating children with disabilities who may be in need of special education and related services. TWO-HOUR DELAY SCHEDULE    Wayne Local will refer to a 2 hour early childhood delay schedule as Plan “B” Kindergarten and Preschool.  Plan “B” A.M. Half-Day Kindergarten and Preschool will begin two (2) hours late and remain in school for two hours.  These students will leave school one-hour later than usual.  School transportation will pick your child up two hours later than normal and bring your child home one hour later than normal.  Plan “B” P.M. Half-Day Kindergarten and Preschool will begin one (1) hour late and remain at school for two hours, dismissing at the regular time.  School transportation will pick your child up one hour later than normal.  Your child will be delivered home at the normal time.  Plan “B” Full-Day Kindergarten will start two hours late and dismiss at the regular time.  School transportation will pick your child up two hours later and deliver them home at their normal time. John Kasich, the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Public Safety are launching the SaferOH tip line that will accept both calls and texts 24 hours a day for schools that register for the service.  This tip line will allow students and adults to anonymously share information with school officials and law enforcement about threats to student safety—whether that involves a threatened mass incident or harm to a single student.   Calls or texts to 844-SaferOH (844-723-3764) are answered by analysts in the Ohio Homeland Security’s Threat Assessment and Prevention (TAP) Unit.  When action is needed, the TAP Unit immediately forwards information to local school officials, local law enforcement agencies and others, if necessary.  TAP Unit analysts always follow up quickly with the affected school and law enforcement agencies to make sure that the incident is investigated, action is taken and the outcome is tracked.    The Wayne-Local School district is register with this free anonymous tip line.  Help keep our schools safe by reporting suspicious activity to 844-SaferOH. BCI AND FBI BACKGROUND CHECKS All volunteers and coaches must have BCI and FBI background results on file at Wayne Local Schools. The FBI background check must be redone every 5 years. As long as you continuously live in Ohio the BCI background check will not have to be redone after the initial submission. The Superintendent’s Office has the capability to process these checks. The Superintendent’s Office or building offices can tell you what results we currently have on file. The Superintendent’s office will be open to do fingerprinting on TUESDAYS from 9:00 – 2:30. WAYNE LOCAL PRESCHOOL PROGRAM   Wayne Local Schools offers services to both special needs and typical children with curriculum and settings tailored to the science of early childhood education.   The Wayne Local School preschool provides both center-based and itinerant (visiting) teaching for children ages 3-5 who are identified by the district as children who would benefit from specific interventions to address delays or needs.  Teachers, aides and therapists work with children to achieve goals specified in their Individual Education Plans (IEP’s).  Typical children are also an important part of the preschool classrooms, serving as peer models and sharing in activities based on Ohio’s Early Learning Content Standards.   Please visit the Wayne Local website to find out about our Preschool application process, timeline, enrollment packets, screenings and cost.  Applications are online.  Applications are being accepted in the Superintendent’s Office.  Applications must be hand delivered. WAYNE LOCAL HALL OF FAME   The Wayne Local Hall of Fame exists to recognize individuals who exemplified excellence in two categories: 1) Academic Leadership (accomplishments while a student in the Wayne Local School District, and/or 2) Success and Citizenship (accomplishments after graduation from Wayne Local School District, or while an employee of the school district, or for other significant contributions to the school district). Nomination forms may be picked up in the Superintendent's office or found on the Wayne Local website “Hall of Fame form”.  Deadline for forms is March 30, 2016. We have opened the event to all grade levels this year from Preschool to High school. It’s not too late to still think, create and build. Last year we had over 75 students participate we would love to double or triple that this year. You can enter your own creation or together as a team!! DREAM..... CREATE.....BUILD ...you are only limited by your own imagination!!  Get Ready for the Cardboard Challenge! Be sure to get those registration forms filled out and turned back in!!! This year we have some fantastic event sponsors and are offering a $100 Grand Prize , we also have some other cash prizes as well as tickets to Kings Island, Cincinnati reds, COSI, Cincinnati zoo, Newport Aquarium and more   Students of all grade levels in the Waynesville School District are invited to build a cardboard creation and bring it to the cafeteria on Wednesday, March 9 at 5:30 P.M. for the Cardboard Challenge Arcade. The underlying rule of this event is simple: students use cardboard and other recycled materials to create an original project. That's all. Unlike some schools we do not collect dues to be part of the PTO, everyone is invited and encouraged to be part of this great organization. Everything the PTO does is done by volunteers, no one is paid to help with any of our events.  We are all parents like you, with 1 or more kids who attend the Wayne local school district, our kids play sports and do after school activities, many of us also coach baseball, basketball, soccer, football or lead cub scouts, boy scouts or girl scout troops. We love to come together to come up with fun ideas for the students of our schools. We really would love to see some new parents volunteer to help at different events, it is a great way to meet others in our community!!        Have you ever considered an officer position on the PTO before? This year would be a great opportunity to shadow our current officers, as many of them have served 2 consecutive terms in their current position. Our bylaws state that you can only serve 2 consecutive terms in a particular position, so several will either need to take a different position or have someone replace them. Progressive Women’s Club Invites Local High School Seniors to Apply for   Scholarships Deadline: April 11th The Progressive Women’s Club has long offered scholarships to local graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated scholastic merit, leadership and community service. This club is a group of Waynesville-area women who are dedicated to strengthening our community through service, philanthropy and education. Members raise funds to distribute to local nonprofit charities and to offer educational scholarships.  Members also contribute their time and talent in support of other community needs.      Any graduating high school senior residing in the Wayne Local School District may apply for a Progressive Women’s Club Scholarship. This means applicants may be enrolled in Wayne Local Schools, private school, parochial school, vocational school, or may be home schooled.    Wayne Local High School seniors may obtain the application form from High School Guidance Counselor Mrs. Cathy Joefreda-Wells.  Forms also may be obtained via email by writing Lisa Gooding, PWC Scholarship Chairperson, at lagooding22@gmail.com.  DEADLINE for submitting completed application packets to the Progressive Women’s Club is April 11^th.  Details are in the application.  Also, scholarship recipients and their parents are invited to attend the Progressive Women’s Club dinner meeting, Wednesday, May 4^th.  (4/8)
