COMMUNITY CALENDAR SALE Once again the Waynesville Band Program is selling Community Calendars for the 2016-2017 school year.  The band has been selling these calendars for over 50 years!  These 12 month flip calendars are in full color and feature photos of many school and community groups.  The calendar runs from September through August, and contains important dates for the community such as village meetings, sporting events, school board meetings, etc.  The best part is that YOU can add your own listings: birthdays, anniversaries, meetings and memoriam.   Calendars are $8.00 each, and if you would like to add a listing it is $1.00 for each event.  So, for example, if you order two calendars and would like to add two birthday listings, the total cost would be $18.00 ($16.00 for the calendars and $2.00 for the listings).   Please see any band member to order yours – students also went door to door on May 7th.   You can fill out the “Sorry We Missed You” order form and send it to school!  Checks can be made payable to Waynesville Band Boosters.   Thank you for supporting our Waynesville Band Program!   Leslie Schleman Band Director Wayne Local Schools 513.897.4706 x3117 lschleman@wayne-local.com

SUMMER READING TIPS   Your children have grown to be great readers this year!  They have learned many new reading skills that will still need to be practiced over the summer to ensure retention and prevent summer reading setback.  Studies have shown that children, who do not read over the summer, may lose two- three months of reading achievement.  Over a six-year period, that can leave a student up to two years behind in reading achievement skills.  This summer, encourage your child to READ!  Reading is a great way to relax and it helps your child enter the next grade level prepared for success!   Below you will find some tips to make summer reading a fun experience for your child.

  1. Keep books in the car and make sure a good book gets tucked into sports bags and backpacks.
  2. Get your child his own library card.  Take your child often to browse for books and enjoy the summer reading program at The Mary L. Cook Public Library.
  3. Help your child select books on topics he/she is interested in and on their reading level.  Have your child choose a page in the book (not the first one) and read it.  If he/she doesn’t know five or more of the words, then the book is too hard for pleasure reading.
  4. Try to limit TV and video games. Have a variety of reading materials around the house for your child to read.  Magazines, books on tape, and newspapers are all great!
  5. When traveling with your child, ask him or her to read aloud to you traffic signs, road signs, store signs, maps, billboards, words on trucks and vans, menus, and other printed information you see.
  6. Does your child want to learn about something new? Perhaps he or she would like to learn about sewing, cooking, or gardening.  Find a book about it, and have your child read the instructions and then give it a try.
  7. Have your child keep a journal during summer vacation.  Suggest that your child write at least two or three sentences a day about things he or she does, sees or thinks about each day. Your child can also write a letter to friends, or family telling them what they are doing during the summer to maintain the important writing skills they have developed during the school year.
  8. Play common word and language games such as Scrabble, Hang Man, Boggle, Smart Mouth, and MADLIBS.  It’s a fun way to build vocabulary and strengthen language skills.
  9. Let your child explore some quality reading websites:

WELLNESS SUN SAFETY With the warmer weather it’s important to remember to protect our skin.  Here are some tips to keep in mind.  Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.  Do not burn.  Avoid tanning and UV tanning beds.  Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.  Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.  Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.  Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.  Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.  See your physician every year for a professional skin exam. PTO NEWS ELEMENTARY PTO   WE hope everyone has had a fantastic 2015/2016 school year ...it's hard to believe this year will soon be over...We wanted to say THANK YOU to all the wonderful parents who have helped this year in so many ways, from donating food, clipping box tops, entering coke rewards, making copies, volunteering in the classroom, helping at the different events we coordinated, volunteering at field day, helping and supporting our fundraisers and so many other ways!!! Our organization is only as strong as our volunteers!!   Drum roll......We had elections for our 2016/2017 officers during our May meeting ..... please help me in congratulating our new and returning officers who will take position in August ! They will do a fantastic job!  Congratulations:     President: Jen Pond Vice Pres.#1 Mindi Squire Vice Pres. #2 Jamie Manley Treasurer: Courtney Buck Secretary: Jessica Dupps    Please become a part of this fabulous organization, the more hands we have the more we can accomplish!     I wanted to take a moment to say how much I have enjoyed being the WES PTO President for the past 4 years and vice president for 3 years prior, and a part of the PTO for the last 8 years. My time as President had to come to an end, as the bylaws state an officer can only hold a position for 2 consecutive terms.  I will continue to play an active role in the PTO, but decided not to run for an officer position this year, as I will have 2 children at the middle school & only 1 at the elementary. I will be offering some assistance to the middle school as well. I will continue to be an active part of this fabulous organization and will help Jen Pond in her transition as the new President. I have also committed to coordinating the Santa shop and also helping with the Cardboard Challenge. I hope to see many new and returning faces helping next year and the years following. I hope you feel out team of officers did a great job for our school!  -Thanks Michelle Weaver   WANT TO HELP.... but aren't able to come into the school??Can you be a coordinator of Box tops or Tyson labels; you can do both of these from home? email for info if able to do this next school year wespto2010@gmail.com   We are always looking for parent to enter coke rewards codes in and then transfer them to the school. We are also looking for people to clip boxtops. These are all things you can do from you home. We will send home with your student ...then you send back in once complete. Contact me at wesptop2010@gmail.com if interested.       PLEASE SEND IN ALL BOXTOPS, LABELS FOR EDUCATION, COKE REWARDS, TYSON LABELS BEFORE the end of the school year!!     Labels for Education has announced after 42 years they will be discontinuing their program at the end of 2016 ... you will begin noticing that products will no longer have labels on them. Please start sending in your labels so our coordinator Beth Anticoli can get them ready to be mailed in.   We had a great turn in for BOX tops, as the school year draws to a close please send in any additional labels you may have collected, many of the bonus labels expire during the summer months and we want to be sure the school earns the extra money for those labels. Thank you to all that turned in for the last submission.     We would like to invite you to our monthly PTO meetings. They are held on the first Tuesday of the month, in the elementary school library(media center). All are welcome to attend and generally we have child care provided by the NHS students. We would love to hear your new ideas and suggestions.  Next meeting will be early August to plan for the 2016/2017 school. Please consider joining us and letting us know what ideas you have for the year!! Also come and welcome our new and returning officers! Time and date will be posted as it approaches!   Do you know what PTO stand for? Parent Teacher Organization. Unlike some schools we do not collect dues to be part of the PTO, everyone is invited and encouraged to be part of this great organization. Everything the PTO does is done by volunteers, no one is paid to help with any of our events.  We are all parents like you, with 1 or more kids who attend the Wayne local school district, our kids play sports and do after school activities, many of us also coach baseball, basketball, soccer, football or lead cub scouts, boy scouts or girl scout troops. We love to come together to come up with fun ideas for the students of our schools. We really would love to see some new parents volunteer to help at different events; it is a great way to meet others in our community!

JOIN US…6TH ANNUAL WAYNESVILLE ALUMNI BOYS/GIRLS BASKETBALL BENEFIT GAME FOR CLAYTON DANIELS FAMILY - Sat. May 21 Their Story:  Clayton has a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresia and MAPCAs.  In layman’s terms, little Clay has a hole in his heart, no pulmonary artery connecting the heart to the branch pulmonary arteries and his branch pulmonary arteries were very small – only 1 mm in size. Clayton has already had one open heart surgery and had his first two cardiac catheterization procedures.  The first was shortly after he arrived at Cincinnati Children’s to make sure there were no issues with the heart repair from the open heart procedure. The second was a few weeks later.  During this procedure, the doctors were able to start ballooning his branch pulmonary arteries and making them bigger. His arteries went from just 1mm to 2mm. While this doesn’t seem like a big deal, it made a huge different in his oxygen levels. The day before Easter, Clayton had two major deoxygenation spells. After being admitted into Cincinnati Children's, he received a blood transfusion and he perked right back up.  A third cardiac catheterization procedure was performed and the doctors were able to balloon his arteries from 2mm to 4mm. 4mm is the size of a “normal” baby’s arteries at birth.   Today, Clayton is making great progress. He will be continuing to do cardiac catheterization procedures every 6-8 weeks until his second open heart procedure in July at Stanford Children’s Hospital. The next few years will be filled with catheterization procedures and a few more open heart surgeries. Clayton has a long road ahead of him, but with lots of love and prayers, he will continue to fight and grow.   Why Do We Need You?  To help Clayton and family defer the costs of travel to Cincinnati and Stanford and the expenses associated with his treatments.   When: Saturday, 21 May 2016 Where: Waynesville High School Gym Times: 6:00 pm (Girls)/7:30 pm (Boys) Costs: $10/Alumni Player (includes a shirt), $3 Admission Donation Info: Account Set Up at LCNB – Drop off Tax Deductible Donations made out to Clayton Daniels Family Benefit Fund or mail checks to LCNB, c/o Clayton Daniels Family Benefit Fund, P.O.
