GOOD NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE WAYNE LOCAL PRESCHOOL PROGRAM - Applications accepted March 1 at 8:00 a.m. Wayne Local Schools offers services to both special needs and typical children with curriculum and settings tailored to the science of early childhood education. The Wayne Local School preschool provides both center-based and itinerant (visiting) teaching for children ages 3-5 who are identified by the district as children who would benefit from specific interventions to address delays or needs. Teachers, aides and therapists work with children to achieve goals specified in their Individual Education Plans (IEP’s). Typical children are also an important part of the preschool classrooms, serving as peer models and sharing in activities based on Ohio’s Early Learning Content Standards. Please visit the Wayne Local website to find out about our Preschool application process, timeline, enrollment packets, screenings and cost. Applications are online. Applications will not be accepted until Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 8:00 a.m. in the Superintendent’s Office. Applications must be hand delivered. (Applications will NOT be accepted prior March 1.)
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS The National Honor Society has been hard at work this year. The Wayne Local chapter has been donating their time and services locally in many ways. Beginning with the American Legion German Sundae booth at the Sauerkraut Festival, money was raised toward Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas presents for families in need. Along with the efforts during the Sauerkraut festival, NHS has worked in PTO events by helping with Santa’s workshop and the upcoming Cardboard Challenge. Concluding with the last fundraising event that is currently in effect, selling chocolate. NHS has teamed up as a group to raise money to donate toward the Waynesville Food Pantry by selling chocolates to their fellow classmates and peers. Through these efforts, the National Honors Society hopes to make a difference in the community and the surrounding area. We look forward to inductions on March 4th, when we will welcome a new class of members to the organization. CARDBOARD CHALLENGE It's time for .....The Cardboard Challenge, this event will be open to All students of Wayne local schools. We have opened the event to all grade levels this year from Preschool to High school. It’s not too late to still think, create and build. Last year we had over 75 students participate we would love to double or triple that this year. You can enter your own creation or together as a team!! DREAM..... CREATE.....BUILD ...you are only limited by your own imagination!! If you need an entry form they can be picked up in the elementary office. Get Ready for the Cardboard Challenge! Be sure to get those registration forms filled out and turned back in!!! This year we have some fantastic event sponsors and are offering a $100 Grand Prize, we also have some other cash prizes as well as tickets to Kings Island, Cincinnati reds, COSI, Cincinnati zoo, Newport Aquarium and more. Students of all grade levels in the Waynesville School District are invited to build a cardboard creation and bring it to the cafeteria on Wednesday, March 9 at 5:30 P.M. for the Cardboard Challenge Arcade. The underlying rule of this event is simple: students use cardboard and other recycled materials to create an original project. That's all. The rest is left to the creators’ very capable imaginations. Volunteer judges from engineering, arts, and similar professions will be on hand to talk to students about their projects. MRS. TURNER’S AWESOME FIRST GRADE Wow! Our year is quickly passing by. I have seen such growth in the students in their orally reading fluency and reading comprehension. We have been working on reading comprehension by focusing on the skills of, “back up and re-read” and “check for understanding”. Many young readers believe if they can “speed” read, then that makes them a great reader. Our group discussions have been that reading quickly doesn’t make you a great reader. Sometimes, it makes us careless and we may or may not even understand anything we have just read. The students are learning to slow down a bit, ask themselves questions about what they have just read. Does that make sense? These practices will help young readers grow into strong readers. In Math, we are learning about adding and subtracting with and without regrouping. Regrouping is a very difficult skill for some students. I encourage parents to continue to review student’s papers/activities on a daily basis to see how their child is progressing with this new concept. In Writing, we have been focusing on several key concepts. Students are working on using appropriate capitalization and ending punctuation, writing in complete sentences and staying on topic. We have also been learning about opinion writing. Opinion writing is challenging for first graders. Most young writers struggle with proving their opinion, giving reasons for their opinion. Young writers generally write, “I like it because it is nice”. Sometimes, it is hard for them to give more details to show their opinion on a topic. A great idea for helping to improve this skill is to ask your child their opinion on a topic and have them orally tell you their thoughts first. Then try to write their ideas down. We thank Dr. Cronley for visiting our school to talk to the students about dental health this month. Dr. Cronley helps our students understand the value in good dental health habits. Miamisburg Art Gallery High School Art Exhibition 2016 This year the 25th Annual High School Art Exhibition/Competition, sponsored by the Miamisburg Art Guild and the Warren County Educational Service Center, is being held at the Miamisburg Art Gallery located at 16 N. Main Street in downtown Miamisburg. Ribbons for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place will be awarded for each category in the show. Best of Show winner will receive a special ribbon and prize as will winners of the President’s Award, Jack Blandford Award, Doris Harting Award and Joan W. McCoy Memorial Awards. Other prizes will be based on results of fund raising efforts. Seven Categories are: Portraits, Landscape, Still Life, Animals, Figures, Dimensional Art Projects, and a catch-all category “Computer Generated Art, Geometric Design, and Other” Mediums are: Oil, Pastels, Acrylics, Pen & Ink, Charcoal, Watercolor, Pencil, Clay, etc. Students may offer their art work for sale. Special Awards for Schools this Year! Participating schools are: Carlisle HS, Franklin HS, Madison HS, Miamisburg HS, Monroe HS, Springboro HS, Valley View HS, and Waynesville HS. WAYNE LOCAL HALL OF FAME The Wayne Local Hall of Fame exists to recognize individuals who exemplified excellence in two categories: 1) Academic Leadership (accomplishments while a student in the Wayne Local School District, and/or 2) Success and Citizenship (accomplishments after graduation from Wayne Local School District, or while an employee of the school district, or for other significant contributions to the school district). Nomination forms may be picked up in the Superintendent's office or found on the Wayne Local website “Hall of Fame form”. Deadline for forms is March 30, 2016. WAYNESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL BAND AND CHOIR PREPARING FOR CONTEST The Waynesville High School Concert Band has been preparing three pieces since early January—Excelsior (Galop) arranged by Gene Milford, Shenandoah by Frank Ticheli, and Beyond the Cosmos by David Shaffer. Likewise, the choir has been working on music to take to contest. Our musicians have been working very hard to polish the music, and on Friday, March 11, 2016 the Waynesville High School Concert Band will be taking the stage in hopes of earning a Superior rating (I) at the OMEA District 13 Large Group Adjudicated Event. This annual contest gives area bands and choirs the opportunity to polish three pieces of music then perform in front of three judges, who rate the performance on tone, intonation, interpretation and technique. The judges then award a score of I through V, with I being Superior, II Excellent, etc. After the ensemble’s performance on stage, they are then directed to the sight-reading room where music that has never been seen before is passed out to the group. The students and director are given four minutes to look over the music silently, and an additional four minutes for the director to talk the students through the piece. After that, the ensemble then plays or sings the piece of music, trying to perform it with as few errors as possible. The sight-reading judge then awards the group a rating as well, and all four judges’ ratings are added together. If the combined scores are between 4 and 6, the band receives a Superior rating (I) and is eligible to perform at State Large Group Adjudicated Event. To prepare for this event, the Waynesville High School Concert Band and Choir will be performing their Pre Contest Concert on Monday, February 29, 2016, at 6:30pm in the High School Gym. In addition to regular concert goers, there will be professional musicians/music educators in the audience to give constructive feedback to both ensembles as they make their final preparations for contest.
MIDDLE SCHOOL CONCERT COMING SOON Mark your calendars for Monday, March 21st at 6:30pm – it’s time for the next Middle School Concert! All middle school bands and choirs will be performing in the high school gym. In honor of the month of March, all three middle school bands have been working on marches, learning about the style and form of these unique pieces of band literature. In addition, each band will be playing a thematic piece that has posed new challenges for our young musicians. Come support the hard work these students have been making – you will notice a huge difference from December’s Winter Concert!

Pasta for Pennies Contest The High School Student Council members are bringing PASTA for PENNIES contest to Waynesville High School! This will be a 7th period contest during the entire month of February. The winning class with the highest per student donation average will earn an Olive Garden pasta lunch!!! We have a high school goal of $1000, and students and parents are both encouraged to donate their spare change to the donation boxes in their 7th period classrooms. There will also be a donation box in the High School office. The Pasta for Pennies contest benefits The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Every penny, nickel, dime, quarter, or dollar donated means so much to patients affected by cancer, and these donations will help to save lives!!! So, please help support this worthy cause!!! Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month-February Start Talking to your teen/tween about dating relationships. Studies show there is a dangerous gap between a daughter’s relationships and a parent’s awareness of that relationship. While studies also show that 80% of parents agree that it is important to have a conversation about dating violence only 3% identify NO VIOLENCE as a characteristic of a healthy relationship. About 47% of teens have been in a romantic relationship while only 19% of parents think their teen has been in a relationship. In cases of unhealthy relationships, 33% of daughters state they have been in an unhealthy relationship. Only 27% of their parent report saying the same thing. There is a significant difference in the formal reporting of verbally abusive relationships as well. Over 62% of teens report that they have been verbally abused in a dating relationship. Only 34% of the parents have formally reported the verbal abuse to authorities or the partner’s parents. And finally, only 37% of parents know of controlling behavior in their child’s dating relationship. They do not know that controlling relationships involve 10 phones calls or 25 texts a day to check up on a boyfriend or girlfriend. MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL 2016 SUMMER ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES: START PLANNING NOW! Wright State University offers Pre- College Summer Camps 2016. These programs offer enrichment and exploration of many interesting subjects. The WSU office of Pre-College Programs in conjunction with the College of Science and Mathematics, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the University Libraries are pleased to offer Exploring STEMM – Enriching Minds through Science 2016, as well as Residential Camps and Institutes focused on STEMM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine. Students who are selected will participate in a variety of STEMM disciplines over a two-day period. Students will spend the night one night on campus under the supervision of residential Assistants.

UNITED STATES SERVICE ACADEMY SEMINARS – APRIL Interested in learning about the application process for the Air Force, Military, Naval, and Merchant Marines Academy? Join an informational session in Ohio near you. Interested students and their parents are invited to attend one of the informational seminars co-hosted by Senator Sherrod Brown and Senator Rob Portman. There will be nine seminars across the state throughout the month of April. On Thursday, April 7, 2016 there is a seminar scheduled for Warren County. Location: Symmes Township Library 11850 Enyart Road Loveland, OH 45140, 6:00- 8:00p.m. More will be scheduled for the Beavercreek, Bowling Green, and Cleveland area- TBA. Liaison officers from the Naval, Military, Air Force, and Merchant Marine academies will be present to speak and to answer questions. In addition, Academy Coordinators will discuss the congressional nomination process that will use to select qualified men and women. The privilege of nominating candidates to the United States service academies is one that entails a great deal of responsibility. Like the academies, they are interested in students who have demonstrated leadership potential and excellence in academics, athletics, and extra-curricular activities. Next year we will have a new site called arbiterlive that will keep all of the schedules up to date for everyone. I will have a URL once the renovation of the website is updated. Lady Spartans Basketball Sectional Champs! (Greeneview Win 49-37) The Lady Spartans basketball team defeated Greeneview last Saturday by a score of 49 to 37 to become sectional champions. The team played a very good defensive game and was led in scoring by Rachel Murray with 22 points and Taylor Ritter with 17 points and 13 rebounds to secure the win. The team will be playing in the District Championships at Springfield Saturday at 11:00a.m vs Versailles. Pre-sale tickets are available in the High School office for $6 until 3:30 Friday. We hope to see a sea of orange coming out to support this exciting team.
Spartan Football MULCH Madness The Waynesville High School Football Team will be selling mulch again this year. This annual sale serves as a fundraiser to help offset the cost of our team camp at Higher Ground. Each bag of “Triple Shredded Dark Black Gold” mulch is $5. Free delivery is included with orders of 5 or more bags within a 5 mile radius, and will be dropped off on Saturday, April 30th. Baseball Season is Underway! Baseball has 30 students trying out this spring. So far during the first week, the team was able to utilize the turf 3 out of 4 for practice. The Spartans are looking to continue the success of previous seasons.
Varsity Boys’ Basketball End of Season Recap The boys basketball team wrapped up their season on Saturday with a tournament loss to the 4th seeded Thurgood Marshall Cougars 77-58. The Spartans were led by Griffin Cook with 18 points. Logan Fruhwirth added 16 points and 4 steals, Micah Schenking scored 11 points and led the way with 7 rebounds. The Spartans overall record for the season was 7-16 with a 3rd place finish in the SWBL Buckeye Division. The boys played with great energy and passion throughout the year despite many close losses. We want to thank our Senior Captains Chase Struewing, Eli Elton, Beau Caplinger and Logan Fruhwirth.

The JV Team finished with a 11-11 record overall.
Softball Season is underway! The softball team has 24 players trying out for this year’s squad. The team has been practicing at Beyond the Game thanks to Jeff Kennard. The team is working to get back the SWBL championship this season!
Swimmers at State! The Girls 200 medley relay team of Sabrina Ball, Tara Nix, Kylee Meredith and Kierstyn Cassidy competed at state and finished 22nd. Kierstyn Cassidy made the state finals in both the 200 & 500 free and will compete this evening in both events.

2016 Waynesville High School Baseball Youth Skills Camp – Saturday, March 19th Waynesville High School Baseball will be holding a youth skills camp on Saturday, March 19th. All players will receive instruction from current players and coaches that will better prepare them to continue on the tradition of excellence in the Waynesville Baseball family. Instruction will be adjusted to meet and improve the specific areas of need as determined by the abilities of each individual camper. 1st Grade -– 4th Grade - 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM 5th Grade –- 8th Grade - 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM Registration forms are available in the middle and high school offices as well as the youth association website. Inaugural Waynesville Baseball Cornhole Tournament – March 19, 2016 – 1:00 PM Tickets are now on sale for the inaugural Waynesville Baseball Cornhole Tournament on March 19th. The cost is $20 per team. All teams are guaranteed at least three games, pizza, water, and entry into raffle drawings. Games will begin at 1:00 PM in the outfield of the varsity baseball diamond. In case of inclement weather, games will be played on the football field or in the middle and high school gyms. REDUCING ENERGY CONSUMPTION AT HOME Reducing energy consumption around your home is an important way to go green and it could save you money. You can reduce your utility costs by being more conscious of your energy choices around your home. Here are a few simple ways to reduce costs and energy: Unplug Electronics like computers, TVs and cell phones will drain power even when they’re turned off or fully charged. The U.S. Department of Energy says 75 percent of electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while products are turned off. Save energy by making sure you totally cut off power to your gadgets when they’re not in use. Either routinely unplug devices from the wall or purchase power cords that can be switched on and off to cut off multiple power sources at once. Wash Wisely Your dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer are two huge sources of energy depletion in your home. Wash wisely by using cold water whenever possible, and make sure you gather a full load of laundry or dishes before washing to maximize each usage. Don’t forget to clean your lint filter after drying your clothes – a clean filter improves air circulation. Be conscious of how much you prewash your dishes; scraping off food, rather than rinsing is sufficient. Also let your dishes air dry. Cook Consciously If you’re cooking for one or two, consider investing in smaller appliances, such as a toaster oven. A toaster oven can use one third to half as much energy as a full-sized oven, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Remember to keep range-top burners and reflectors clean. This will help reflect the heat more efficiently, and will save you energy. Be sure to cover your pots when boiling or heating liquids. Not only will it get the job done more quickly, but you’ll be reducing your energy output. Do Daylight Daylighting is the use of windows and skylights to bring sunlight into your home. FLU SEASON Flu season up until this point has been relatively mild, but flu activity is predicted to increase over the coming weeks. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Flu symptoms: Fever or feeling feverish/chills; Cough; Sore Throat; Runny or Stuffy Nose; Muscle or body aches; Headaches; Fatigue Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. 2016/2017 SEVENTH GRADE VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS The Ohio Department of Health has revised the School Immunization Requirements effective January 4, 2010. All students are to receive an additional dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine BEFORE entering the seventh grade. If your child has received a Tdap vaccine within 5 years of entering the seventh grade (2012 or later), this will meet the requirement. Additionally, beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, one dose of meningococcal vaccine is required prior to entry into the 7th grade. This requirement is met if your student has had this vaccine at any time before entering 7th grade.
2016/2017 SENIOR VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Meningococcal: Beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, all pupils entering the 12th grade are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal. A second (2nd) dose of meningococcal) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 12th grade. The second (2nd) dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday with at least eight (8) weeks between the first and second dose. If the first dose of meningococcal vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. If a pupil is 15 years of age or younger, only one dose is required. GENERAL INFORMATION CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT Ohioans who suspect child abuse or neglect now have one phone number that can put them in contact with child welfare or law enforcement officers in their county. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) launched 855-OHCHILD (855-642-4453), where reports can be anonymous.

Child find is the process of identifying, locating and evaluating children with disabilities who may be in need of special education and related services. TWO-HOUR DELAY SCHEDULE Wayne Local will refer to a 2 hour early childhood delay schedule as Plan “B” Kindergarten and Preschool. Plan “B” A.M. Half-Day Kindergarten and Preschool will begin two (2) hours late and remain in school for two hours. These students will leave school one-hour later than usual. School transportation will pick your child up two hours later than normal and bring your child home one hour later than normal. Plan “B” P.M. Half-Day Kindergarten and Preschool will begin one (1) hour late and remain at school for two hours, dismissing at the regular time. School transportation will pick your child up one hour later than normal. Your child will be delivered home at the normal time. Plan “B” Full-Day Kindergarten will start two hours late and dismiss at the regular time. School transportation will pick your child up two hours later and deliver them home at their normal time. John Kasich, the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Public Safety are launching the SaferOH tip line that will accept both calls and texts 24 hours a day for schools that register for the service. This tip line will allow students and adults to anonymously share information with school officials and law enforcement about threats to student safety—whether that involves a threatened mass incident or harm to a single student. Calls or texts to 844-SaferOH (844-723-3764) are answered by analysts in the Ohio Homeland Security’s Threat Assessment and Prevention (TAP) Unit. When action is needed, the TAP Unit immediately forwards information to local school officials, local law enforcement agencies and others, if necessary. TAP Unit analysts always follow up quickly with the affected school and law enforcement agencies to make sure that the incident is investigated, action is taken and the outcome is tracked. CI AND FBI BACKGROUND CHECKS All volunteers and coaches must have BCI and FBI background results on file at Wayne Local Schools. The FBI background check must be redone every 5 years. As long as you continuously live in Ohio the BCI background check will not have to be redone after the initial submission. The Superintendent’s Office has the capability to process these checks. The Superintendent’s Office or building offices can tell you what results we currently have on file. The Superintendent’s office will be open to do fingerprinting on TUESDAYS from 9:00 – 2:30. This event is open to all Waynesville students and their families as well as school staff. This is a private event and only students from our school will be there!!! The PTO has taken care of the cost of the building, you will just need to rent skates ($4) or rollerblades ($5). Parents are welcome to skate too; if you are not skating there will be no cost for you. An adult must stay on site with students no drop offs!! We expect students to behave as they would in school, using good manners and being courteous and polite to others. Skateworld is also offering all you can eat pizza for only $5 per person and that includes a small drink. Come join us for some skating fun! CALLING ALL BOX TOPS ....yes it’s that time again!! LAST CALL -Please send in all your box tops by February 29th. The top 2 classes will WIN a class party of their choice. It's time for .....The Cardboard Challenge, this event will be open to All students of Wayne local schools. We have opened the event to all grade levels this year from Preschool to High school. It’s not too late to still think, create and build. Last year we had over 75 students participate we would love to double or triple that this year. You can enter your own creation or together as a team!! DREAM..... CREATE.....BUILD ...you are only limited by your own imagination!! Get Ready for the Cardboard Challenge! Unlike some schools we do not collect dues to be part of the PTO, everyone is invited and encouraged to be part of this great organization. Everything the PTO does is done by volunteers, no one is paid to help with any of our events. We are all parents like you, with 1 or more kids who attend the Wayne local school district, our kids play sports and do after school activities, many of us also coach baseball, basketball, soccer, football or lead cub scouts, boy scouts or girl scout troops. We love to come together to come up with fun ideas for the students of our schools. We really would love to see some new parents volunteer to help at different events, it is a great way to meet others in our community!!
Have you ever considered an officer position on the PTO before? This year would be a great opportunity to shadow our current officers, as many of them have served 2 consecutive terms in their current position. Our bylaws state that you can only serve 2 consecutive terms in a particular position, so several will either need to take a different position or have someone replace them.
