In 5th grade math, we just wrapped up our unit on volume by creating a volume zoo! At the beginning of the unit, students worked in pairs to design a zoo animal using rectangular prisms. They created a plan for the types of boxes they would need to collect in order to create this three-dimensional zoo animal, and began saving lots and lots of boxes. This week, students were finally able to begin construction! They measured the dimensions of their boxes and found the volume of every box being used, then determined the total volume of their zoo animal. After that, they were able to really showcase their creative sides by wrapping their boxes with colored paper, and giving their animals accessories and habitats. They truly had a blast!
