Suicide Prevention Education

for Waynesville Middle School

& High School Students

All students grades 6-12 will receive Suicide Prevention Education on November 28, 2018. Students will view a WHS student made prevention video which will be followed by a brief discussion surrounding the content of the video. The video content includes red flag behaviors, suicide statistics among teens, how to talk to someone who might be having suicidal thoughts, and how to get that person help. The script was adapted from information gathered from the Mayo Clinic and the Suicide Prevention Life Line. Two students from the Teen Alliance Council of Warren County are featured in this video along with 6 of their classmates.

The goals of this education is to:

  • Help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness and that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
  • Stress the importance of taking time to notice others especially those who appear to be struggling and possibly suicidal
  • Help students identify the signs of someone who is thinking of committing suicide
  • Teach students HOW to TALK to someone who is showing signs and importance of asking the hard question “Are you thinking of killing yourself?”
  • Give students the knowledge on how to GET HELP for a person who is thinking of suicide

This video is true and honest and stresses the importance of asking the hard question. If you do not wish your child to participate in this year’s Suicide Prevention Education please fill out the bottom of this form and return it before November 28th.
